One of the many questions dentists get asked is “WHY IS MY WISDOM TOOTH HURTING???”
A typical full set of adult dentition consists of 32 teeth, of which four of them are those infamous PESKY LITTLE BUGGERS called the WISDOM TEETH. The wisdom teeth are normally found at the very back of the four corners of your mouth. They are also the very last adult teeth to emerge from the gums.
Being the little brother of the dental family, they are almost always known for the disruptive and mischievous behaviour that brings about extreme pain and agony to their MASTER, that is US!! (in very much the same way as your youngest sibling in the family..hahaha =P)
One normally experiences wisdom teeth problem if it is decayed or growing in a peculiar way. Quite commonly, the are either growing horizontally or slightly slanted at a 45 degree angle. This peculiar angle causes eruption to become stunted prematurely. As the tooth may only be half-out at this point, the gum overlying the tooth can become inflammed as a result of biting from the tooth above or it may become infected by bacteria.
Treatment of wisdom teeth typically involves cleaning of teeth OR surgical extractions. The procedure itself is almost painless but do expect some extent of discomfort and swelling for the following 2 to 3 days. We normally prescribe medications after surgery in order to make your recovery as tolerable as possible.
